The Other End of the Leash
Author: Patricia McConnell
Comments: The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends.

After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation.

The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you’ll understand why much of what appears to be doggy-disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn
• How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask.
• Why “getting dominance” over your dog is a bad idea.
• Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble–and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble.
• How dogs and humans share personality types–and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alphawannabees!”

In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships.

The Culture Clash
Author: Jean Donaldson
Comments: *The Culture Clash is special. Written in Jean's inimitably informal yet precise lecture style, the book races along on par with a good thriller. *The Culture Clash depicts dogs as they really are - stripped of their Hollywood fluff, with their loveable 'can I eat it, chew it, urinate on it, what's in it for me' philosophy. Jean's tremendous affection for dogs shines through at all times, as does her keen insight into the dog's mind. Relentlessly she champions the dog's point of view, always showing concern for their education and well being. Without a doubt, Jean's book is the hottest doggy item on the market. Best Training Book Of The Year! (Maxwell Award)

For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend
Author: Patricia McConnell
Comments: Yes, humans and canines are different species, but current research provides fascinating, irrefutable evidence that what we share with our dogs is greater than how we vary. As behaviorist and zoologist Dr. Patricia McConnell tells us in this remarkable new book about emotions in dogs and in people, more and more scientists accept the premise that dogs have rich emotional lives, exhibiting a wide range of feelings including fear, anger, surprise, sadness, and love.

In For the Love of a Dog, McConnell suggests that one of the reasons we love dogs so much is that they express emotions in ways similar to humans. After all, who can communicate joy better than a puppy? But not all emotional expressions are obvious, and McConnell teaches both beginning dog owners and experienced dog lovers how to read the more subtle expressions hidden behind fuzzy faces and floppy ears.

For those of us who deeply cherish our dogs but are sometimes baffled by their behavior, For the Love of a Dog will come as a revelation–a treasure trove of useful facts, informed speculation, and intriguing accounts of man’s best friend at his worst and at his very best. Readers will discover how fear, anger, and happiness underlie the lives of both people and dogs and, most important, how understanding emotion in both species can improve the relationship between them. Thus McConnell introduces us to the possibility of a richer, more rewarding relationship with our dogs.

While we may never be absolutely certain what our dogs are feeling, with the help of this riveting book we can understand more than we ever thought possible. Those who consider their dogs part of the family will find For the Love of a Dog engaging, enlightening, and utterly engrossing.

Canine Behavior: A Photo Illustrated Handbook
canine behavior bookAuthor: A photo illustrated handbook Barbara Handelman, M.Ed. CDBC
Comments: This book is gold. Have you ever wished you could put your hands on a visual canine ethogram? Stop looking, this is it or something very close to it. The author, a trained psychotherapist has been working with and teaching children with linguistic disabilities all her life and has acquired skills as a professional photographer when trying to catch and freeze moments of her own children's life in time. This enabled her to develop an exquisite sense of observation with children and with her animals. She was always surrounded by animals and was fascinated by their behaviors. Now she puts her training to use to enable us to better understand what these animals do.

This book is at its second edition. For those of you who do not have it already, have a look you will not be disappointed. Barbara has included not less than 1000 photos of canine behavior and terminology to enable us to use the appropriate vocabulary when we talk about canines. The fact that she was a psychotherapist has enabled her to share some elements regarding learning theories. Barbara has succeeded in making visible all kinds of canine behaviors that we would never have been able to see for ourselves. Also Barbara was able to show how they express stress and how many signals they have to express this. In fact the incredible amount of stress expressing signals surprised her. For her it was a very important discovery. All the photos are identified and commented.

For those of you who have copies from the first printing, you will see that in the new version the reproduction of the pictures is vastly improved, allowing all the detail in the photos to be clear and crisp. The text is essentially unchanged but the improved quality of photos makes such a huge difference that it is worth buying the book again! I recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated with animal behaviors particularly canines.

Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved
Author: Dr. Ian Dunbar
Comments: Combining two popular titles in one value-priced edition, Before and After Getting Your Puppy is a simple, practical guide for anyone bringing a new puppy into the home. In clear steps, with helpful photos and easy-to-follow training deadlines, Dr. Ian Dunbar, who pioneered puppy classes and a loving style of dog training in the 1970s, presents a structured yet playful and humorous plan for raising a wonderful dog. The guide is based on six developmental deadlines: completing owner education and preparation, assessing a puppy's prior socialization and education, teaching errorless house-training and chewtoy-training, completing a socialization program of meeting strange dogs and people, learning bite inhibition, and continuing a program of ongoing training. In the first half of the book, Dr. Dunbar focuses on what the owner needs to know to select a great puppy. In the second half, he presents the crucial lessons the puppy must be taught during its impressionable early development - using a kind, positive approach that, over time, has been proven the most effective.

Play With Your Dog
Author: Pat Miller
Comments: Who knew there are canine play behaviorists? I get dog behaviorists, like Cesar Millan and Patricia McConnell, but who knew there were specialists in dog play? Pat Miller is that and much more. She's written several books on dogs, dog training, etc. and I enjoy her writing very much. Down to earth, practical, and warm. She has a sense of humor and she really loves dogs. This book is great for people who want to expand their play with a dog. Maybe you have a dog like mine, who doesn't seem to know how to play. I got mine from a rescue, and he's just not interested in balls or ropes, playing chase, or tracking. I got the book in hopes it might help me get my dog into playing. Pat Miller explains a lot of different kinds of play, which I'm trying, and noticing in other dogs. She has terrific ideas for games to play with dogs. Some are training games, but a lot are just for fun. She has ideas for expanding play: if your dog is obsessed with balls, she has ideas for what you can do in addition to Fetch. This would be so fun for athletic people who want to do active sports with their dog. Also fun for kids who have energy to burn and want to have fun with their dogs. She tells about activities for dogs, like Flyball, Rally, Obedience, and others. These are sports you do with your dog, and they're just for fun. I enjoyed the book and look forward to many fun games with my dog. If you like to play with dogs, you'll enjoy the book. Great gift for dog lovers!

Genetics, Breeding and History

Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution
dogAuthor: Raymond Coppinger, Lorna Coppinger
Comments: Biologists, breeders and trainers, and champion sled dog racers, Raymond and Lorna Coppinger have more than four decades of experience with literally thousands of dogs. Offering a scientifically informed perspective on canines and their relations with humans, the Coppingers take a close look at eight different types of dogs--household, village, livestock guarding, herding, sled-pulling, pointing, retrieving, and hound. They argue that dogs did not evolve directly from wolves, nor were they trained by early humans; instead they domesticated themselves to exploit a new ecological niche: Mesolithic village dumps. Tracing the evolution of today's breeds from these village dogs, the Coppingers show how characteristic shapes and behaviors--from pointing and baying to the sleek shapes of running dogs--arise from both genetic heritage and the environments in which pups are raised.

For both dogs and humans to get the most out of each other, we need to understand and adapt to the biological needs and dispositions of our canine companions, just as they have to ours.

Sos Dog: The Purebred Dog Hobby Re-examined
Author: Johan Gallant, Edith Gallant
Comments: This book delves into the world of the purebred dog, and where it is going in regards to health and the best interest of the dogs themselves. Heretofore, dogs have been bred to satisfy human goals and ambitions, but to what detriment? When the British first started their Kennel Club just over 100 years ago, and the first dog show was held, little was known about the genetics of dogs. It was assumed that when you bred the best to the best, the result was something even better. Unfortunately, this naïve ideal has led to the downfall of dogs, with a large percentage of all dog breeds being plagued with either a genetic disability, or an inherited disability. The question is, can the damage already done be repaired?

In SOS Dog: The Purebred Dog Hobby Re-Examined, authors Edith and Johan Gallant have addressed this very issue. The authors devote a chapter to the history of the dog, and how they came into the human household, and then continue with a description of the needs of the dog. They outline and detail the seven capital sins of the dog world and compare modern dog to the pariah type dogs found throughout the world that still abide by natural law. In closing, they offer suggestions of what may be done to repair the damage done by over 100 years of breeding incorrectly.
